Flowering water plants, tall leafy green trees, and lake views are found at Des Peres Park just north of Manchester Road.
This one-mile trail goes around two lakes, sports fields, and a playground. A hidden oasis near West County Center.
By the Lake
I parked in the large lot that entered from Ballas Road.
Near the entrance to the paved trail, I came across a sign that explained what the park had to offer. Then I headed to the left going around the larger of the two lakes.
Along the walk I found a sign explaining how aquatic plants help to control stormwater runoff.
Heading around the lake I came across a boardwalk that someone was fishing from. It went through some flowering plants. A sign here explains the importance of water plants in providing fish habitats.
I headed back on the main trail and saw a large turtle lifting its head out of the water.
In the middle of this lake is a wooden bridge next to a huge weeping willow tree. (Blog featured photo)
Field Walk to Playground
The path leads away from the lake and passes by a soccer field than baseball and softball fields.
Another paved trail goes far off into the distance across a bridge towards houses.
Then I hear the hitting of tennis balls at busy tennis courts.
A gray-painted gazebo with a pointed roof stands in the distance.
Then I pass by a colorful playground with climbing structures, walkways, slides, and a water spray area.
Second Loop
I decided to linger longer and do a loop closer around the second lake. Next, I pass back by the playground and then connect to the backside of the main trail.
I find a large group of geese swimming around on the lake.
This time I walk across the bridge and stop at a wooden overlook on the main lake.
I linger for a bit before heading back to the parking lot enjoying the view over the lake.
Final Thoughts
Even though it is about a mile trail you can do this in a series of loops to make it longer or even take an out and back trail to a subdivision. You can’t get too lost since it is not a large park and is made up of a lot of open fields. This is a great stop for some time to commune with nature by the lakes before or after going to the mall.
Other Activities
These include shuffleboard courts and pickleball courts. The park also has restrooms and picnic tables.
