Best of Trento

Trento is city of Renaissance fountains, towering mountains and apple strudel, due to it being once part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.

It is located in northern Italy in the Alps with palaces where bishops used to come for the holidays and surrounded by nature with waterfalls and canyons.

L’Orrido Di Ponte Alto

A deep canyon with waterfalls just outside of Trento, in the 1500s the earliest hydraulics works were built to protect the city from floods. Two weirs give rise to magnificent 40 m high waterfalls that flow through red rocks, thus creating spectacular light effects. You can only visit the canyon on a tour.

Hours: Saturday and Sunday, Tours from 10 am to 6 pm. From June 28 to Aug. 1 tours are given on Fridays f rom 10 am – 6 pm.

Museo Castello del Buonconsiglio (Buonconsiglio Castle Museum)

The castle originated from a fortified building that was erected in the 13th century next to the city walls.

It is the former residence of the Prince Bishops of Trent from the 13th century to the 18th century.

The castle is now a museum that hosts revolving exhibits.

A legend says that the castle was connected by a secret passageway to Trento’s cathedral, which allowed the bishops to move unseen from one to the other.

Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, Early – May to Early Nov. , 10 am – 6 pm; Winter 9:30 am – 5 pm.

Admission: €10 or €20 for Entrance to Buonconsiglio Castle, Beseno Castle, Stenico Castle, Thun Castle and Caldes Castle. Check the website for more information.

Roman ruins of Tridentum

Museo S.A.S.S. Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del Sas

The ancient Roman city of Tridentum lies under Trento. In this museum you can see part of it.

The city was founded here in the middle of the first century BC as the commercial and administrative center in the valley of Adige River.

It was originally 13 hectares and had wide street and bordered by a wall with towers and a moat.

Along with seeing the remains of this Roman town you can also see a multimedia video “Dentro Trento” that shows a three-dimensional journey back in time with reconstructions of the archaeological area using virtual reality technology.

Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, Early June – Late Sept. 9:30 am – 1 pm and 2 pm – 6 pm; winter 2 pm – 5:30 pm.

Cattedrale di San Vigilio

An early church existed here in 400 AD for the martyred Saint Vigilio, the current church was started in 1212.

The northern side that faces the main square has the artistic rich Bishop’s Gate, which was used for the Council of Trent.

The church is known for its rose window, called the Wheel of Fortune, in which allegorically shows that the fate of people can change from one day to another.

Hours: Daily, 6:30 am – 12 noon then 2:30 pm – 8 pm

Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

A Renaissance church built in the early 1500s. It stands on the ruins of an early Christian church. The church is noted for its organ altarpieces and its large doors.

Hours: 7 am – 7 pm in winter until 6 pm., Sundays and holidays from 9:30 am to 12 noon.

Torre Vanga

A medieval tower was the western bulwark of the city walls. At one time a wooden bridge connected it to the abbey of San Lorenzo across the river. During a revolt in 1407, Prince George of Liechtenstein was imprisoned in it. The tower now hosts exhibitions.

Hours: Tuesday- Sunday, 9 am -12 pm and 1 to 5 pm, to 4 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Closed Mondays.

Muse (Trento’s Museum of Science and Natural History)

Layout of the museum: You start from the top: the terrace and the 4th floor allow us to encounter the sun and ice; from there, you descend to investigate the issues of biodiversity, sustainability, and evolution, until you reach the basement and the wonders of the tropical greenhouse.

Hours: Saturday and Sunday, 10 am – 7 pm; Tuesday- Friday, 10 am – 6 pm, Closed Mondays.

Admission: €10, Family Rate – 2 parents with underage children €20 and one parent with underage children €10. Free for children six and under.

Museo dell’Aeronautica Gianni Caproni

Italy’s oldest aviation museum established in 1927 aviation pioneer Giovanni Battista Caproni and is located by the Trento Airport. You can see helicopers, early 20th century biplanes, jets, and modern and historical military aircraft.

Hours: Tuesday to Friday 10 am-1 pm and 2 pm – 6pm; Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, 10 am – 6 pm, Closed Mondays.

Admission: €4.50 and free entry for children up to 14 years. Family Tickets: 2 adults and children under 18 €9 and 1 adult and children under 18 €4.50.

The fortress Castel Beseno

Castel Beseno

A large Medieval fortress with knight’s armor on a hilltop setting.

It is a scene of past conflicts including the Battle of Calliano of 1487, fought between Tyrolean and Venetian troops who suffered a resounding defeat in their advance to Trento.

Here you can see a permanent exhibition on this battle and weaponry from that period. You can also walk along the ramparts.

Hours: Summer Tuesday- Sunday 9:30 am – 6 pm, Spring and Fall until 5 pm, Winter only Saturday and Sunday 9:30 am- 5 pm, Check website for specific dates and hours.

Admission: Adults €5 and children under 15 free.
