A palace outside our price range? Actually a beautiful grounds and palace that is a must see when you are in Munich. Constructed between 1664 and 1674, Nymphenburg Palace was originally a summer residence for Elector Ferdinand Maria and Henriette Adelaide of Savoy. It is free to be on the grounds, if you don’t have the time or budget to see the palace and it is worth doing!
WHAT A FRIEND WHO LIVES IN MUNICH HAS TOLD US:
Most important fact to know about short-term renting in Munich, there is a new city ordinance that temporary leases can be either six months and up, or for short term private rentals up to eight weeks out of the year due to the housing crisis in Munich and home-owners abusing short term leases to tourists to make a profit.
So, the big leasing companies for short term furnished leases like Mr. Lodge can only offer six months and up. On the other hand one can maybe book only the weeks they are in Munich and not for the times they are traveling.
The other option would be AirBnB, but one can legally stay only eight weeks at a time.
On the international people in Munich forum there are serviced apartments –it may be worth a try but possibly outside of one’s budget.
Thoughts of neighborhoods: vibrant although more expensive (Schwabing, Neuhausen, Maxvorstadt, Ludwigvorstadt, Glockenbach, Bogenhausen, Westend, Theresienwiese) or a more quiet family neighborhood (Laim, Pasing, Sendling, Thalkirchen, Obersendling). Olympic village is an interesting option since some allow for use of an indoor swimming pool.
WHAT WE WERE DOING:
In our case we are checking Mr. Lodge and Airbnb, Homeaway, VRBO and Homelike and are thinking of finding a place outside of the city center to save money and use the U-Bahn as our transportation. This is what we know so far as we search for the home away from home!
HOW WE FOUND A PLACE
We found the website Homelike.com to be the best. They offered longer leases and seemed to have a wide variety of places to live. We had a choice between three properties. One was to the east of the city center. It had one bedroom and a small deck. Another one we found was south of the city center. It was a basement apartment in a residential neighborhood with had one bedroom. It was a quiet neighborhood with nearby restaurants and a park, but was still 20 minutes away.
What we settled on was a first floor one bedroom apartment with a living room, separate kitchen and dining area and a bathroom with a bath/shower combo which will help in getting the kid to take a bath. We are just south of the city center and near shops, a wide variety of restaurants and even park areas by the river. This was probably the best location possible since my husband could even possibly walk to the university for work. We can easily walk to the Marienplatz and visit the museums, churches and historic sites. Some of my kid’s education can be done by us visiting the museums and talking about what we see and what we learn on tours. The apartment is more expensive than one that we might have found further out, but it is worth it is so we can really have the experience of living in Munich!
