First Day of Kindergarten

Andrew’s first day of kindergarten seemed to be easier for him than me since he was excited about it where I was a bit sad and uncertain about this big change in his life.

First Assignment

His teacher had an assignment for him to help the class to get to know each other. He was to fill a small paper bag with items that are important to him.

This included a picture of all of us as a family. He brought Euros that we had leftover from Germany since this was something special to him since we lived there back in the spring of 2019. A Spiderman glove was included since he loves superheroes. Also, he brought swim goggles because he really enjoys swimming as his favorite activity.

Taking Him to School

Before the start of school, we went outside and took a picture of him with his backpack filled with school supplies

We drove him to school. Here we were in a lineup of cars dropping him off at the side door one by one. Saying goodbye to him in the car due to Covid-19 as he headed towards the building and his class without us. We had prepped for this earlier.

The Day Before

On the day before the school had a walk-through. We entered through the door he would go through each day then walked through the hallway then up the stairs to where the kindergarten classes were. Here I looked for the name of his teacher. I found it and then pointed the name out to him.

We walked in and looked around. Next, we found his desk and he took a moment sitting there like he would be at school.

His teacher couldn’t be there due to Covid-19. She did have a video introduction of herself online that we watched.

Then we walked outside of the classroom to the main hallway and I told him that one of the lockers along the wall was his. He quickly noticed his name on one.

“This will be your locker to put your stuff in, like your jacket or coat,” I explained.

I then walked him by the nearby boy’s bathroom. Showed him the cafeteria and on the way out. Then showed him the library and the technology room. I stumbled upon these places as we walked through the school. But, I wanted him familiar with the school’s layout before his first day.

Heading Into School

As I watched him head into the school David remarked, “He’s not looking back.”

“I know he’s a big boy now.”
