Gay Dad Shares Magical Drawings on Instagram

Fellow gay dad Kyle Cummings draws dinosaurs, spaceships, and magical places with a kid-at-heart glee that he shares on Instagram. He started drawing and making up stories as a small child and never really stopped.

I interviewed him on where he comes up with his ideas and what is life like now raising a small child.

Tell me a little about yourself and your family?

My husband and I live in Southern California with our son and dog. Our son is growing too fast, and so is our dog (because our son keeps giving him his food).

Our life got turned upside down when we adopted our son at 5 days old, so my art took a bit of a backseat while I was learning how to raise a human and function on minimal sleep.

Things are better now and I’m getting more time to get back into doodling!

Where does your inspiration come from for your drawings?

Pop culture is definitely an influence, as are children’s books and comic books. For me, everything started when I was a kid with Calvin & Hobbes.

How do you describe your art?

 Whimsical, simple, and hopefully charming?

Do you have a website for your art?

kyledrawsthings.com, but more stuff is at @kyle.draws.things on Instagram.

For YEARS I was drawing a dinosaur everyday and posting it to Instagram, but that stopped/got put on pause pretty quickly after having a newborn!

 Are they available for sale?

Prints and shirts and the like are at:

Has your art been in a book?

I’ve been published in several magazines including US News & World Report and a Halloween themed art book called October Shadows and a gay comics anthology called Young Bottoms in Love.

Where can people interested in your art go for information?

 kyledrawsthings.com

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I’m hoping to get back into more routine posting — I haven’t stopped making art, but some things are paid jobs I’m not allowed to share for a while! I also hope to get back to my stack of children’s books I’d like to illustrate, especially now that I have a son!
