You can take a one-mile trail through the woods and along a creek at Webster Park, near the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO.
This loop hike is mostly along gravel with a short section of pavement from the front of the lot where I parked. It has 108 feet of elevation gain and crosses a few small hills. The walk also goes into Heatherbrook Park.
Start of the Walk
I parked near the front of the park, near restrooms attached to a community building with picnic tables around it.
Next, I followed a paved trail to the right around the parking lot, crossing the park road.
On the left is a playground with a treehouse theme, including a tube slide, climbing structures, a boardwalk, and swings.
In the far right corner of the playground is the start of the gravel trail, which at first follows the paved trail around the parking lot.
You will come to a sign that says “Trail to Heatherbrook Park,” which I will check out on my way back. I went to the right of the sign to take the trail into the woods away from the parking lot.
In the Woods
Now, the gravel trails go through trees. I stop momentarily to photograph purple phlox flowers along the way.
The trail goes up and down a hill.
Then curves around closer to a creek on the right.
I heard a noise in the woods and saw a whitetail deer scamper off, so there is wildlife here.
Along the way, I noticed the two parts of the loop come close together with a short connector, so you can’t get lost.
Finally, the trail comes out of the woods. I can go left and head back to Webster Park, but I decide to go right to do an out and back to Heatherbrook Park.
Heatherbrook Park Section
The trail crosses high over a creek and then curves toward Heatherbrook Park.
In the park, I find another playground, shelter, and restrooms.
Across a field is a pond. If you want to explore further, you can walk across the field to check out the pond.
Instead, I headed back towards Webster Park.
Last Part
I come up from the creek and see a shelter in Webster Park. I noticed a gravel trail to the right, so I explored it.
This trail passes through bushes and into the back of the playground before ending at the park road.
At the park road, I make a left and walk back to the parking lot.
Final Thoughts
This is a nice break if you want some time to commune with nature before heading to the Family Arena or downtown St. Charles. If I had my son with me, we would explore the woods and then check out both playgrounds.
DETAILS
Both parks have restrooms and picnic facilities. The gravel trail, with its ups and downs, does not work well for strollers, and the gravel is washed out in places.
DRIVE: Take Interstate 64 to Interstate 270 north, then take Exit 16 for Missouri Highway 364 and go west. Then take exit 14 and make a right onto Arena Parkway. At the first stoplight, make a left onto S. River Road and then a right onto the entrance road for the park.
