What I learned at Dad 2.0

At the Dad 2.0 Summit in Washington D.C., dads shared their lives including funny instances with their kids and how quickly they seem to grow up.

I left St. Louis on Thursday, March 28, to gain some insight on daddy blogging and make connections with other dads across the US and even met some Canadian dads.

The best part of Dad 2.0 was the shared stories of fatherhood.

Opera singer Kenneth Kellog shared how much becoming a dad has changed him. He has performed in an opera called Blue about the killing of an African-American son being killed by the hands of a police officer.

On Friday night I listened and took part in Dad Voices and listened as dad’s recounted personal struggles along with just the frustration of getting the kid to listen to you.

Funny stories were talked about such as the fact that your kids might eventually no longer love hearing Lynyrd Skynyrd on the radio.

So far at four, my son has enjoyed my 80’s New Wave station, but I worry one day this will end and I have no idea what kids listen to now.

I shared what happened at my son’s bris, which I wrote about in the book Queer Families.

I met Brian Salmon, author of The Birth Guy’s Go-To Guide for New Dads. Look for a future interview with him on my site on his one-of-a-kind survival guide for expectant dads as part of my new Book Club. He also found an awesome seafood restaurant near the hotel, great food, great time.

Donte Palmer started the #squatforchange movement after an Instagram post with him squatting on the floor to change his kid’s diaper.

I’ve been in that moment more than once in a men’s bathroom without a changing table when my son was a baby.

Palmer has created a movement to install changing tables in men’s restrooms throughout the country. Look for an interview with him later in March.

Steve Disellhorst wrote Determined to be a Dad on adopting a child as a gay dad. His book comes out in June. I will interview him for a future feature for my Book Club.

Mitch A. Chaitin is a fellow gay dad from New York City, like my husband. His blog is gaynyc.dad.com. We had some fun conversations about raising kids and I am still jealous of his R2-D2 suitcase.

Along, with these dads, I met The Rookie Dad, who also rejoiced with the Chief’s winning the Super Bowl.

I hope to see them possibly again at Dad2 in 2021!
